Democrats Target Nebraska Senate Seat as GOP Faces Growing Challenges

A Marine veteran in Omaha says he will back independent Dan Osborn over Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts, highlighting Democratic optimism to capture the Senate seat.

In Omaha, Marine veteran Gunner Arellano told reporters he will not support Sen. Pete Ricketts, opting for Dan Osborn, an independent backed by the Nebraska Democratic Party. Arellano criticized Ricketts for limited presence in the state and praised Osborn as more attuned to everyday Nebraskans. Republicans have invested about $15 million in advertising, while Osborn’s campaign and supporting groups have allocated roughly $5 million.

Democrats view the contest as a rare opportunity to flip a Senate seat that has been Republican since 1997, a move that could help them secure a Senate majority. The race coincides with a competitive House contest in the 2nd District, where Democrat Denise Powell faces Republican Brinker Harding after Rep. Don Bacon announced his retirement. Both parties argue that voter fatigue with the incumbent party could shape the November outcome.
