Demolition begins on over 100 homes destroyed in Krokstadelva blaze
Demolition crews started Monday clearing the remains of more than 100 houses destroyed in the July fire in Krokstadelva, with plans to first create a green space before rebuilding.
Following the July inferno that razed over 100 homes in Stenseth, Krokstadelva, demolition work commenced on Monday to remove the wreckage. Drammen municipality granted demolition and remediation permits for 116 residences and two garage structures. Mayor Kjell Arne Hermansen said the cleared land will initially become a park, and new housing will not be built for several years. The fire, the largest of its kind in Norway in a century, forced the evacuation of more than 400 residents.
Why it matters
The fire wiped out hundreds of homes, displacing many and requiring years of rebuilding for the Krokstadelva community.
