Den Norske Isbilen to cease operations by year-end amid financial woes
Den Norske Isbilen announced it will shut down its ice-cream trucks in Norway by the end of 2026 after years of economic difficulty.
Den Norske Isbilen will withdraw its iconic ice-cream trucks from Norwegian streets by the end of 2026, citing persistent financial problems. In a statement, the board and management said they had exhausted efforts to improve the company’s fiscal outlook and therefore opted for liquidation. CEO Kirsten Ægidius called the decision extremely difficult, noting the impact on employees nationwide.
The closure comes months after Froneri, one of the world’s largest ice-cream producers, bought Den Norske Isbilen and the long-standing brand Isbjørn Is, which has been making ice cream on Askøy since 1962. While Den Norske Isbilen will disappear, other mobile vendors such as Diplom-Is will continue to operate.
Why it matters
The shutdown ends a familiar local brand and highlights challenges faced by niche food-service businesses.
