Denmark Deploys Conscripts to Greenland Amid Growing Arctic Tensions

For the first time in recent history, Danish conscripts arrived in Greenland as part of an expanded conscription program aimed at operating in the kingdom's challenging Arctic region. The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly voiced interest in the territory, a claim denied by Copenhagen and Greenlandic authorities. Conscripts are training in the Arctic Endurance drill, which supports NATO's Arctic Sentry mission intended to reinforce the alliance's presence north of the Arctic Circle.

Captain Laura Jepsen said the exercise builds experience in extreme cold and terrain, while trainees like 19-year-old David and 22-year-old Anton said it signals Denmark's future readiness. Denmark's defence minister has admitted years of underinvestment and pledged billions for new infrastructure. Russia has criticized NATO's increased activity, calling it a security threat, and China has stepped up its mineral-focused operations in partnership with Moscow.
