Denmark launches EU's first large-scale CO₂ storage facility with Ineos partnership
Ineos Energy, Harbour Energy and the North Sea Fund have opened Denmark's inaugural large-scale carbon-capture storage site, marking the EU's first such project.
A carbon-capture storage complex in Denmark has begun operations, built by Ineos Energy in collaboration with Harbour Energy and the North Sea Fund, becoming the EU's first large-scale CO₂ repository. The project follows Norway's Øygarden and Northern Lights facilities, which already store significant amounts of emissions. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chair of Ineos, stressed that the installation is already functional and that the challenge now lies in scaling capture across Europe.
The Danish site will first receive CO₂ from local biomethane plants, transport it by truck to a terminal in Esbjerg, and ship it offshore for injection into a former oil reservoir. EU energy commissioner Dan Jørgensen hailed the development as proof that carbon storage can move from demonstration to practical use.
Why it matters
It demonstrates that large-scale carbon storage is viable in the EU, supporting climate goals while preserving industrial activity.
