Denmark orders mass turkey cull after detecting highly contagious bird flu
Danish authorities confirmed a highly pathogenic avian influenza case in Bøgelunde, Slagelse municipality, and will cull the affected turkeys.
The Danish Food Authority reported the first confirmed outbreak of a highly contagious bird flu strain on Sjælland this season. The virus was found in a turkey farm in Bøgelunde, Slagelse municipality. Mette Kirkeskov Sie, head of the authority, noted that such cases typically appear in autumn as migratory birds pass over Denmark. Several wild birds have also tested positive in recent weeks, prompting the decision to cull the flock on Saturday.
Why it matters
The cull aims to stop a highly contagious bird flu from spreading to other farms and potentially affecting humans.
