Denmark's central bank mirrors ECB move and raises policy rate

Nationalbanken increased its key interest rate by a quarter point, aligning with the European Central Bank’s recent hike.

Nationalbanken disclosed in a statement that it has lifted its leading interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point, echoing the European Central Bank’s recent policy tightening. The ECB’s move, which was the second rate increase this year, typically targets countries using the euro, yet Denmark’s commitment to a fixed exchange rate with the euro leads its central bank to follow suit. The Danish bank’s decision reflects this alignment rather than a direct response to domestic inflation pressures.

Allan Sørensen, chief economist at Dansk Industri, commented that the primary objective of Denmark’s central bank is to keep the krone stable against the euro, not to chase inflation trends. This rate adjustment underscores the interconnectedness of monetary policy within the euro-linked economies.

Why it matters

The rate hike signals Denmark’s continued commitment to its currency peg, affecting borrowing costs and economic outlook.
