Deputy Environment Minister urges fast completion of Suwung landfill wastewater plant
Deputy Environment Minister Diaz Hendropriyono called for the immediate finish of the wastewater treatment plant at Bali's Suwung Landfill to stop leachate from harming mangroves.
During a site visit to Suwung Landfill in Bali, Deputy Environment Minister Diaz Hendropriyono highlighted ongoing leachate seepage as a critical threat to the surrounding mangrove forest and demanded the wastewater treatment facility be finished immediately. While acknowledging the landfill's efforts to restore mangroves and implement fire-mitigation actions under the Ministry of Environment's Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026, he stressed that without proper treatment the polluted runoff could kill mangrove plants.
He warned that the landfill will reach its limit within two to three months, making it unable to accept more waste. Consequently, Diaz urged the public to practice household waste sorting to lessen the load. The statement underscores the urgency of completing the treatment plant to protect the vulnerable coastal ecosystem.
Why it matters
Leaking landfill waste threatens Bali's mangroves, a key coastal buffer and biodiversity habitat.
