Deputy Prime Minister urges cabinet plan to boost motorcycle safety in Malaysia
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi asked the Transport Ministry and Miros to draft a cabinet paper outlining a coordinated national strategy for motorcycle safety.
At the Conference on Asia Road Safety 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged the Transport Ministry and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) to prepare a cabinet paper proposing a coordinated national approach to motorcycle safety. The paper should detail priorities, timelines and measurable results, and be supported by an integrated road-safety intelligence platform linking agency data.
Zahid highlighted that motorcyclists represent the largest share of road fatalities in Malaysia, stressing the need for safer roads, better infrastructure and effective policies. He warned that awareness campaigns alone cannot change risky behaviour and called for joint effort from government, industry, schools and communities. The initiative aligns with the government's goal of cutting road deaths by 50 % by 2030.
Why it matters
Motorcycle crashes cause most road deaths in Malaysia; a coordinated policy could dramatically improve safety.
