Descendants of Blackfeet chief seek restoration of former Redskins name and logo

Family members of Blackfeet chief Two Guns White Calf are lobbying to reinstate the former Washington NFL team name and mascot that were retired in 2020.

Descendants of Blackfeet chief Two Guns White Calf, whose image inspired the Washington NFL team’s former mascot, are campaigning to revive the discontinued name and logo. They say the original emblem, designed by Walter "Blackie" Wetzel in 1971, was a source of pride and that activists erased their family’s legacy when the name was dropped in 2020. Estate spokesperson Morningstar Gopher, along with Kenneth and Brock Conway, assert that they were never consulted during the rebranding.

The family is seeking not only the return of the name but also a stadium dedication to the chief. They plan to request a meeting with President Trump to press the case, while attorney Denise Rosado supports their legal effort. The group believes restoring the branding would honor their heritage and please longtime fans.
