Descendants Secure 470-Acre Texas Farm with Permanent Conservation Easement

Martinek Farm, a 470-acre parcel near La Grange in Fayette County, Texas, has been placed under a permanent conservation easement donated by Russell and Debbie Friemel and Ardie Friemel Holsinger. The easement, filed in 2026, safeguards the land’s agricultural use, open space, and the ecologically important Ross Creek, which feeds the Colorado River. The family, whose connection to the property dates back to Joseph Martinek’s 1911 purchase, retains ownership and can continue farming the land.

The protection comes amid growing pressure from surface mining, highway expansion, and oil-gas extraction in the surrounding Colorado River basin. Soils on nearly half the farm qualify as Farmland of Statewide Importance, and the area supports diverse habitats, including oak savannah, prairie grasslands, and riparian forests. Historical and archaeological significance was recognized with a State Archaeological Landmark designation in 2025.
