Detroit startup Grounded secures $5 million seed funding and opens large manufacturing hub
Grounded announced a $5 million seed round and the launch of a 50,000-sq-ft Detroit factory to expand its modular van-customization platform to both electric and gasoline models.
Grounded, founded in 2022 to outfit electric vans with a Lego-style modular system, has pivoted to serve small-business fleets using both electric and gasoline vehicles. After securing a $5 million seed round from investors including Also Capital, The 81 Collection, Animal Capital, the Michigan Outdoor Innovation Fund and SpaceX alumni, the startup opened a 50,000-square-foot Detroit manufacturing plant. Production begins this month with capacity expected to rise next year, allowing the company to apply its modular platform to a broader array of chassis, from Ford’s Transit to Mercedes-Benz’s Sprinter.
Customers already include brands like Colgate and Nokia, as well as medical and veterinary organizations. Chief product officer Nadia Meyer noted growing demand from food-and-beverage and public-safety clients. Shapiro emphasized that Grounded is not an EV maker but a provider of high-tech, adaptable workspaces built on any vehicle chassis.
Why it matters
The funding and new factory let Grounded scale its flexible van-customization tech for a wider range of commercial fleets.
