Deutsche Bahn launches permanent family ticket for long-distance travel
Deutsche Bahn now offers a lasting family ticket for second-class long-distance journeys, allowing up to five passengers to travel round-trip with seat reservations included.
Deutsche Bahn has made its family ticket a permanent offering for long-distance travel in second class, permitting round-trip journeys on IC and ICE trains. The ticket bundles seat reservations and accommodates up to five passengers, with flexibility on who can travel together. An adult aged 15 or older may travel with up to four children, or two adults with up to three children.
According to the railway, the ticket will be offered with high availability, though on very busy connections it may be sold out. This initiative follows public backlash in mid-2025 when the company eliminated a separate family reservation option that had allowed groups to reserve seats together for a low fee. The new ticket aims to boost family usage of the rail network.
Why it matters
It provides families with a convenient, reservation-included rail option, encouraging more train travel and addressing earlier criticism.
