Deutsche Bahn launches ultra-fast Hamburg-Munich Sprinter and expands European timetable

Deutsche Bahn introduced a new high-speed Sprinter linking Hamburg and Munich in roughly five and a half hours, with three daily trips each way, stopping only in Hannover and Nürnberg.

The state-owned railway also announced that, from mid-December, its international schedule will grow to more than 320 daily services, adding routes to France, Italy and Austria. The new Sprinter between Hamburg and Munich runs three times daily in both directions and limits stops to Hannover and Nürnberg. Michael Peterson, head of long-distance traffic, said the service offers a cost-effective alternative to car and plane travel amid high fuel prices, and fares will stay unchanged.

Why it matters

The new fast link and expanded international schedule boost rail travel options and could shift passengers from cars and planes to trains.
