Deutsche Bank clears a historic hurdle to settle yuan trades in Europe

Deutsche Bank has become the first non-Chinese bank permitted to settle yuan transactions in Europe, marking a step toward broader use of China's currency abroad.

The German lender secured approval to process yuan settlements on the continent, a move that aligns with Beijing's push to expand the renminbi’s role in global finance. China’s latest five-year plan emphasizes using the yuan for overseas development projects, and recent U.S. trade volatility has heightened the urgency of this strategy. Low interest rates in China have also made the currency more appealing to lenders. Despite the milestone, the U.S. dollar still dominates international debt markets, accounting for the majority of global borrowing.

Why it matters

It signals a shift toward greater use of the Chinese yuan in global finance, challenging dollar dominance.
