DHS Diverts Resources to Probe Trump’s Unsubstantiated Voter Fraud Allegations

During his current administration, Donald Trump has prompted the Department of Homeland Security to reallocate resources toward validating his voter-fraud narrative, moving away from traditional election-security duties. Homeland Security Investigations agents, a division of ICE, have been tasked with checking the voting activity of naturalized citizens and initiating removal proceedings against suspected illegal voters.

The effort has produced multiple false leads, including cases where the investigated person never cast a ballot or was unrelated to the alleged wrongdoing, such as a situation where the actual voter turned out to be the suspect’s father. Local election officials, like those in Fort Bend, Texas, have received vague requests lacking concrete names, prompting criticism that DHS is “scraping the bottom of the barrel.” Advocacy group Campaign Legal Center’s Brendan Fischer said the expansion of the SAVE system failed to confirm widespread non-citizen voting, leading the administration to push a limited number of dubious cases. A DHS spokesperson asserted that HSI remains committed to safeguarding election integrity by ensuring only citizens vote.
