Diana's iconic 'revenge dress' set for Sotheby's New York auction in December

Princess Diana's black off-the-shoulder cocktail dress, famously worn at the 1994 Serpentine Gallery event, will be auctioned by Sotheby's in New York this December.

Diana's black, shoulder-free cocktail dress, which she wore to the Serpentine Gallery on 29 June 1994 following Prince Charles' televised confession, is slated for a December auction at Sotheby's in New York. Designed by Christina Stambolian, the silk crepe piece with a chiffon train was once stored in a Scottish vault after being auctioned for charity in 1997. Sotheby's reports the dress remains well preserved, aside from a few loose threads, and has only been worn once.

No price estimate has been released for the upcoming sale. The dress, emblematic of Diana's defiant style, joins other royal garments that have resurfaced on the market, though details of those sales are not included here.
