Diesel-filled fishing vessel grounds, forcing temporary closure of Point Reyes beach

A 58-foot fishing boat carrying about 1,000 gallons of diesel ran aground at Point Reyes National Seashore, leading officials to shut down North Beach temporarily.

On Friday, a 58-foot fishing vessel with roughly 1,000 gallons of diesel aboard became stranded at Point Reyes National Seashore, prompting authorities to close North Beach in San Francisco for safety. A unified command involving the U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service, Marin County Fire, NOAA and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s spill-prevention office was established to manage the incident. The Coast Guard’s incident commander, Lt. Cmdr. Carey Lewis, emphasized protecting responders, the public and the environment.

A contracted salvage firm is being used to remove the fuel, and officials say there are no reported injuries, leaks, or harm to wildlife. The cause of the grounding remains under investigation, and the beach will reopen once the fuel has been cleared and the site deemed safe.

Why it matters

The spill poses a potential environmental threat to a popular coastal area, requiring a multi-agency cleanup effort.
