Diesel hits all-time high in Germany as fuel prices keep climbing

Germany's average diesel price hit an unprecedented €2.453 per litre, overtaking the prior record by 0.6 cent, while Super E10 gasoline recorded its fifth straight high at €2.314 per litre. The rise follows the onset of the Iran war in late February, which has lifted diesel costs by roughly €0.71 compared to pre-conflict levels. Monthly fuel bills for motorists have jumped, with diesel car owners seeing an extra cost of around €69 per month versus pre-war figures.

The government is debating relief measures, with proposals ranging from a temporary VAT cut to income-based direct payments and a CO₂ surcharge reduction. Industry groups warn that the price surge threatens the competitiveness of transport and agricultural sectors, as higher fuel costs strain small and medium-sized enterprises.
