Diesel prices surge, wiping out recent tax cut benefits for Romanian drivers
Diesel prices in Romania have risen sharply, erasing the advantage of a recent excise-tax reduction and adding over a hundred lei to a typical 50-litre fill-up.
Romanian diesel prices have climbed dramatically over the past several months, nullifying the effect of a recent excise-tax cut. While the average price at the end of February was 8.27 lei per litre, current figures at major stations sit between 10.43 and 10.52 lei. The rise of about 2.2 lei per litre adds roughly 108 to 113 lei to the cost of a standard 50-litre fill-up, compared with the earlier price of 413.50 lei.
All six surveyed networks—MOL, SOCAR, Lukoil, Petrom, Rompetrol and OMV—now charge above 10.4 lei per litre. Brief price reductions at the start of the month were short-lived, and by mid-month each network had posted higher rates again.
Why it matters
Higher diesel costs directly increase travel expenses for commuters and freight operators across Romania.
