Digital rights group Noyb sues Scale AI's Outlier over GDPR breaches
Noyb and five independent contractors have filed a complaint against Scale AI’s Outlier platform, alleging violations of EU data-protection rules in several European countries.
On Tuesday, the Austrian advocacy group Noyb announced that it, together with five independent workers, has lodged a formal complaint against the Outlier platform, a service operated by American AI-training company Scale AI. The filing alleges that Outlier gathers large amounts of personal data from its so-called “small-hand” AI workers and places tracking mechanisms on their equipment, actions that Noyb says contravene the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
The grievance is being pursued in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria. Noyb is urging national data-protection authorities to conduct an in-depth inquiry and to consider imposing an administrative penalty on the platform for the purported infringements.
Why it matters
The case could set a precedent for how AI-training firms handle workers' personal data under EU law.
