Diplomatic ID linked to ex-pro-Russia candidate found in raid, Malta Order denies authenticity
A search of Călin Georgescu's home uncovered a diplomatic credential claimed to be from the Order of Malta, which the Order's ambassador said is counterfeit and that Georgescu is not a member.
Police conducting a raid on former presidential contender Călin Georgescu's dwelling discovered a credential styled as a diplomatic ID of the Sovereign Order Hospitalliers of Saint John of Jerusalem, listing him as “Senator GEORGESCU CALIN” with the title “Prior of United States of America” and serial number L 120052 dated May 2025. The Order’s Romanian ambassador, E.S. Roberto Musneci, confirmed that the Order does not produce such documents and that Georgescu holds no membership.
He explained that counterfeit “mimic orders” appear throughout Romania and other European countries, exploiting the Order’s emblems for illicit purposes. An official warning on the Order’s website cautions against organizations falsely presenting themselves as legitimate branches of the Order. Musneci urged the public to verify any such claims through recognized priors or accredited embassies. The case underscores the problem of fraudulent diplomatic symbols being used by political figures.
