Director of new British Raj series urges UK to pay India trillions in reparations

The Revolutionaries, an eight-episode drama streaming on Amazon Prime, dramatizes violent actions by Indian freedom fighters and the British colonial forces. Director Nikkhil Advani says the series is meant to highlight the suffering inflicted during the British Raj and to press the United Kingdom for large-scale compensation. He admits that the character based on Colonel Reginald Dyer is depicted more harshly than historical records to bolster the reparations argument.

Actor Jason Shah portrays Dyer, whose real-life actions at Amritsar in 1919 made him infamous. Historian Jeremy Black has accused the series of offering a clearly prejudiced interpretation of the Raj, noting that the British administration relied heavily on Indian cooperation. The show includes graphic scenes of violence intended to underscore its message.
