Directors Ally Pankiw and Kate Herron Decline HBO's Harry Potter Project Over Rowling's Views
Directors Ally Pankiw and Kate Herron publicly refused offers to work on HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, citing objections to J.K. Rowling's stance on trans rights.
Ally Pankiw posted a text exchange on Instagram where she flatly declined a directing offer for HBO's new Harry Potter series, describing the decision as a stand against transphobia. Her talent agency, WME, had inquired whether she would consider the project, to which she responded with an emphatic refusal. Fellow director Kate Herron confirmed she has also rejected similar proposals, stating her answer will not change.
The production, however, proceeds with a growing roster of actors such as Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Bel Powley as Aunt Petunia, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Bel Powley has publicly criticized Rowling's gender views, aligning with the directors' stance. HBO plans to debut the first season, adapting the first novel, on December 25, with a second season already green-lit. Requests for comment from HBO, Rowling’s representatives, and the directors were not answered.
