DirecTV launches Gemini receiver to unify live TV and streaming apps in one UI
DirecTV’s new Gemini device merges live television and major streaming services into a single, algorithm-driven interface for its subscribers.
DirecTV has introduced Gemini, a streaming receiver designed to combine live TV packages with ad-supported services such as HBO Max, Discovery+ and Peacock in a unified UI. Two versions exist: a base model for satellite customers and Gemini Air for streaming-only subscribers, both available as a dongle or a compact box that plug into a television. After a brief plug-and-play setup, users choose preferred channels, apps and sports teams, which feed the device’s recommendation engine.
The home page features recent channels, a live-feed pane, and algorithm-suggested titles, while lower rows showcase additional live channels and streaming highlights. Gemini also offers an unlimited cloud DVR library, a conventional TV guide, and seamless sign-in to pre-installed streaming apps, with the option to add more via the Google app store. Critics note the need for a DirecTV subscription and that each household requires a separate Gemini device, priced around $50-$75 for boxes and over $200 for dongles on the secondary market. Nonetheless, the reviewer praises its intuitive navigation and ability to remember playback positions, recommending it for current DirecTV users and those considering the service’s genre-specific bundles, which include a free Gemini unit.
