Discarded mine pipes repurposed as artificial dens for endangered northern quolls

Researchers buried HDPE pipes in reclaimed mine waste in north-western Australia and camera footage showed northern quolls using the makeshift shelters.

Scientists have begun converting waste HDPE piping from mining sites into buried artificial dens on reclaimed land in north-western Australia to help the endangered northern quoll. The pipes are buried deep enough to benefit from the surrounding rock’s thermal buffering, maintaining average maximum temperatures of about 33.6 °C and humidity near 62 %, conditions similar to natural shelters. Motion-activated cameras recorded quolls moving in and out of the installations, suggesting the animals are willing to use the new shelters.

The researchers stress that the study does not yet prove the dens support permanent residence or successful breeding, which are crucial for population recovery. They recommend additional experiments to determine optimal pipe length, burial depth, and placement relative to vegetation and prey. If successful, the method could turn post-mining landscapes into functional wildlife habitats while recycling industrial material.
