Disney's Cerritos Workshop Crafts Holiday Magic Through Story-Driven Handcrafting

Disney cast members at a Cerritos warehouse are hand-making and refurbishing holiday décor, insisting every piece supports the park’s storytelling.

Disney’s massive Cerritos warehouse functions as the production hub where cast members build and refurbish seasonal décor for the park, ranging from Halloween pumpkin displays to upcoming winter installations. Phil Rahn, a 21-year veteran and director of resort enhancement, emphasizes that storytelling guides every design choice, ensuring each item has a clear purpose. Associate project manager Tristen Tierney describes the transition to fiberglass pumpkins, the hand-carved, painted and sewn process, and the extensive checks that keep more than 8,000 pieces show-ready despite the region’s heat.

Mechanics, machinists and welders also overhaul ride vehicles and large props, while a small Show Overhaul team, including Devin Sweet, maintains guest-facing elements such as attraction carts and hand-painted trash cans. Installation must be completed within a narrow window between midnight and the 7:30 a.m. opening, often with outside vendors assisting. This effort underpins Disneyland Resort’s role as Orange County’s largest employer, with 36,000 cast members and a culture that values traditional craft over digital shortcuts.

Why it matters

It reveals how Disney’s behind-the-scenes craftsmanship sustains the park’s immersive experience and supports a large local workforce.
