Displaced Palestinians in Tulkarem Face Poverty, Eviction and Uncertain Futures

Since a large-scale Israeli operation in early 2025 emptied the Jenin, Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps, over 33,000 Palestinians have been relocated to makeshift housing in the West Bank. Families such as Hakim Mar’i’s live in a single-room apartment without electricity, relying on blankets for warmth, while his untreated leg injury and diabetes worsen. UNRWA reports that 85% of the displaced lack regular income and that most now rent homes, a new expense for generations accustomed to camp living.

The agency’s limited cash assistance is insufficient, and many families, including Khadija Zbeidat’s, face looming eviction as landlords grow impatient. Ongoing military closures prevent return, and UNRWA’s dwindling budget has forced a shift to targeted aid, leaving thousands without support. Officials warn of rising gender-based violence, mental-health strain on children, and stress that the camps must be rebuilt and residents allowed to return.
