Disqualified AfD Candidates Appeal to Void and Rerun Niedersachsen Local Elections

In the recent municipal elections in Niedersachsen, four AfD nominees were barred from running and have each lodged an appeal to overturn the results. The candidates - mayoral hopeful Justin Vogel in Herzberg am Harz, Oberbürgermeister candidate Thorsten Moriße in Wilhelmshaven, and Landrat candidates Martin Sichert in Friesland and Stephan Bothe in Lüneburg - claim the exclusions breached election law. Their lawyer, Christian Wirth, who also serves as an AfD Bundestag member, contends that the disqualifications were based on improper assessments of party affiliation and alleged constitutional doubts.

He maintains that the bans constitute a serious procedural error that could have changed the vote tallies. The appeals now rest with the election oversight bodies, and if rejected, the candidates may take the case to the administrative courts within a month of notification.
