DNC expands legal team and voter-protection network ahead of tight midterms
The Democratic National Committee has created an internal litigation unit and is mobilizing thousands of election observers to safeguard voting as the midterm contests approach.
To prepare for what officials anticipate could be a close midterm election, the Democratic National Committee has established its first internal litigation department, headed by Dan Freeman, a veteran trial attorney from the Justice Department. The unit includes a second full-time litigator and several support lawyers, and works alongside the Elias Law Group, which also represents the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Beyond courtroom battles, the DNC is scaling a nationwide voter-protection infrastructure, training thousands of volunteers to act as poll observers and launching a voter-assistance hotline in October. Its long-running website, IWillVote.com, will continue to provide registration and voting information. Party spokesman Angelo Fernandez Hernandez said the DNC now has staff in more than 30 states and plans to deploy tens of thousands of observers on Election Day. The move is presented as a counter to the Republican National Committee’s own legal strategy, which includes hundreds of “election integrity” cases and a hotline in 22 target states.
