Doctor and wife attacked in their Edgewood home; suspect arrested

In the early hours of Thursday, Dr. Idris Evans, a physician and medical director at UPMC Children's Hospital, was fatally stabbed in his Edgewood Borough home along Linden Avenue. His wife, who was also attacked, sustained serious wounds but survived after being taken to a hospital in critical condition. Their children, aged 8 and 12, were instructed by their mother to seek safety at a neighbor’s house during the assault.

Police later detained a 32-year-old man named Elijah Hemingway, who was discovered with cuts on his hand and taken for medical treatment before being charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and trespassing. A neighbor, Sandra Trappen, reported that the suspect had been hiding in her backyard garden before being apprehended. Authorities emphasized the impact on the close-knit community and asked residents to avoid spreading unverified details.
