Doctor Balances Hospital Shifts and Coaching as Son Takes Varsity Helm

Tom Frazier, a Louisa native and longtime gastroenterologist at Three Rivers Medical Center, has been coaching football in Lawrence County since 2011, progressing from youth leagues to the varsity offensive coordinator position. His son Mitchell, who played linebacker and quarterback in middle school, was persuaded to take the quarterback job after a teammate declined, and he now leads the Bulldogs as the starting varsity quarterback.

The pair have collected championships at every level, including a middle-school state title in 2022 and a dominant 40-0 win in the recent final. Hospital leadership, including CEO Greg Kiser, has been supportive of Frazier’s coaching schedule, allowing him to balance medical duties with football. Coach Alan Short praised Mitchell’s pedigree and readiness, noting the team’s high expectations after a strong 2025 season. The upcoming season opener against Martin County on Aug. 21 will mark Mitchell’s first varsity start under his father’s sideline guidance.
