Doctors advise skipping coffee when taking oral Wegovy weight-loss tablets

Medical experts warn that drinking coffee or tea with the oral GLP-1 weight-loss pill can reduce its absorption, so patients should take the tablet with only water on an empty stomach.

According to FDA prescribing information, oral GLP-1 medications like Wegovy tablets must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, and patients should avoid any other liquids at the time of dosing. Doctors explain that beverages such as coffee, tea, or juice can hinder the drug’s absorption, potentially diminishing its weight-loss benefits. After swallowing the whole tablet, users should wait a minimum of 30 minutes before consuming breakfast, coffee, tea, or other oral medications.

The recommendation stems from the fact that the oral formulation relies on gastrointestinal uptake, which can be altered by food and drink, unlike the injectable alternatives. Specialists also note that GLP-1 agents may slow stomach emptying, affecting the timing of other medicines. While regular tea consumption generally does not block absorption, patients are encouraged to discuss any concerns with their physicians. Novo Nordisk, the maker of Wegovy, was contacted for comment but did not respond.

Why it matters

Improper timing with coffee or tea can lower the effectiveness of a popular weight-loss drug.
