Documentary alleges CIA-trained Afghan units killed civilians to secure Kabul airport

One outlet's documentary titled “The Path to Zero” presents first-hand accounts that CIA-trained Afghan special forces, known as Zero Units, killed civilians by running them over with trucks and shooting into crowds to clear Kabul International Airport during the chaotic 2021 withdrawal. Retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. Edward Gonzalez and former Marine Sergeant Josephy Laude describe witnessing these killings, while a retired Navy rear admiral said he never received formal reports of the incidents.

Retired Marine General Kenneth F. McKenzie and other officials stressed the units were essential for securing the airport, yet the film alleges the CIA promised evacuation for the fighters and their families, amounting to roughly a quarter of the 124,000 evacuees. In contrast, thousands of interpreters and other allies were abandoned. The documentary further alleges that a Zero Unit member later shot two Army National Guard soldiers, killing Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and seriously wounding Sgt. Andrew Wolfe. Lawmakers and former defense officials suggest investigations and possible criminal referrals may follow.
