Documentary on Hungarian 1956 Revolution Highlights Young Women’s Courage
The documentary "Pesti lányok" about the 1956 Hungarian uprising will be broadcast on Magyar Mozi TV, featuring testimonies from former participants and archival footage.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Magyar Mozi TV will air the documentary "Pesti lányok" in the evening. Director Róbert Kövessy explains that the film emerged from his family’s historical ties to the era and his desire to preserve the memory of the young women who fought alongside men. Funded by the Nemzeti Emlékezet Bizottsága, the documentary combines fresh interviews with surviving participants, such as Hosszú Mari who passed away shortly before filming began, and archival footage provided by the Nemzeti Filmarchívum.
Earlier public showings at the Uránia Nemzeti Filmszínház were packed, and the film has since been screened in multiple schools and student residences, where it was received without incident. Kövessy hopes the film will continue to educate future generations about the personal bravery displayed during the uprising.
Why it matters
It preserves firsthand accounts of women's roles in a pivotal historic uprising for future generations.
