A new Channel 12 documentary titled "Mickey Berkowitz's Last Shot" publicly confirmed that Israel’s most celebrated basketball figure, Mickey Berkowitz, is afflicted with severe, complex dementia and has been living in a care institution away from his home. The program shows his family’s struggle to manage the illness, a secret they guarded for more than two years before disclosing it alongside his receipt of the Israel Prize for Outstanding Sports Achievement.
Berkowitz’s career began in Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth ranks, leading to senior success, two European Cup victories, a 1979 European Championship silver medal and MVP honors, and a brief stint in the United States at UNLV. He later played for Maccabi Rishon Lezion, Hapoel Jerusalem and Hapoel Tel Aviv, retiring as the second-highest scorer in Israeli league history.
