DOJ subpoenas seek records on Governor Newsom's overseas travel payments
Federal investigators have issued subpoenas demanding six years of documents from a nonprofit that financed Governor Gavin Newsom’s foreign trips, as part of a Justice Department probe into the travel funding.
A Justice Department inquiry into Governor Gavin Newsom and his spouse, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, centers on the financing of the governor’s overseas travel. Subpoenas released earlier this month compel a nonprofit that funded the trips to produce six years of financial and operational records, as well as internal emails among the governor’s staff and associates. Federal scrutiny of Newsom’s circle is reported to have started at least a year ago.
In June, Newsom labeled the investigation a politically motivated “fishing expedition,” suggesting it was retaliation by the Trump administration because he is considering a 2028 presidential bid. He claimed federal agents have been visiting friends and former employees not because a crime was found, but to create one. The governor’s office responded, likening the action to a tyrannical pattern of targeting political opponents.
