Dollar General to expand $1 Value Valley lineup by 40% for holiday season

Dollar General said it will increase its $1 Value Valley selection by about 40% before the holiday shopping period.

Dollar General highlighted a rapid rise in its $1 Value Valley program, with 600 items delivering 16% comparable sales growth in Q2, far above the chain’s 3.5% same-store increase. The chain currently carries about 2,000 $1 products and aims to boost that count by 40% before the holiday season, according to COO Emily Taylor, with CEO Todd Vasos saying the expansion will extend into 2027. The strategy echoes traditional grocery loss-leader models, using low-priced essentials to draw shoppers who then purchase higher-margin goods.

Analyst Arielle Feger contrasted this approach with Dollar Tree’s shift toward higher-priced items and a $1 range focused on non-essential goods. The move targets budget-conscious consumers facing stagnant wages and higher living costs, hoping to increase store traffic and repeat visits.

Why it matters

The expansion shows how discount retailers are adapting to inflation-pressured shoppers by using low-price anchors to drive overall sales.
