Dolphins activate rookie WR Chris Bell ahead of season opener

The Miami Dolphins moved rookie wideout Chris Bell from the non-football injury list to the active roster on Aug. 17, giving quarterback Malik Willis another weapon for the opening game.

On Aug. 17, the Miami Dolphins announced that rookie wide receiver Chris Bell has been activated from the non-football injury list, ending his stint on the reserve. Bell, a 94th-overall third-round selection from Louisville who earned first-team All-ACC honors, has been working with trainers to recover from a knee injury that was expected to sideline him for the season. His clearance allows him to be available for the team's season-opening matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 13, potentially joining fellow receivers Caleb Douglas, Malik Washington, Greg Dulcich and De'Von Achane.

Quarterback Malik Willis and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik view the addition as a significant upgrade to a receiving corps that has lacked depth. Comparisons have been drawn between Bell’s skill set and that of Deebo Samuel. The activation comes as the Dolphins also dealt with the loss of Jamaree Salyer for the season.

Why it matters

Bell's return adds depth to Miami's offense, giving the team more options for its season debut.
