Dominican Republic bans Haiti football team from playing on its soil after stadium breach

The Dominican sports ministry has prohibited Haiti's national football team from using any Dominican venues after Haitian fans tried to force entry at a sold-out stadium.

Following a disturbance at the Félix Sánchez stadium, the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Sports issued a blanket prohibition on the Haitian national football team using any Dominican sports venues. Haitian supporters attempted to force their way through a stadium entrance even though all tickets had been sold, an act described as unacceptable by Minister Kelvin Cruz. The incident occurred ahead of the "Hispaniola derby," a high-risk match between the neighboring countries that was heavily policed.

The game itself continued without additional incidents and ended peacefully. The ban reflects ongoing tensions between the two nations that share the island of Hispaniola, and officials warned that future fixtures involving Haiti will not be allowed on Dominican soil.

Why it matters

The ban highlights how sporting incidents can exacerbate diplomatic tensions between neighboring countries.
