DoorDash rolls out text-message ordering, drone pilots and nationwide returns
DoorDash announced plans to let customers place orders via SMS, test drone deliveries in northern California and expand its retail-return service nationwide in November.
DoorDash is adding several new services to its platform. Users will soon be able to order food by sending a text message, a function that extends the Ask DoorDash AI chatbot’s recommendation and checkout capabilities. The firm also revealed a pilot for its DoorDash Air drone delivery service, which will operate in an unspecified part of northern California with restaurants such as Chipotle and Popeyes, and aims to deliver orders within five minutes.
Additionally, DoorDash’s retail-return offering, currently available in select markets, will be expanded nationwide in November, charging $7.99 per return and handling pickup and store drop-off without a box or label. iOS users in the U.S. can join a waitlist to beta test the SMS ordering, while details on Android rollout remain unclear. The company has not set a public launch date for the drone service.
