Doppelmayr wins contract to build urban cable car in Panama City

Austrian ropeway builder Doppelmayr secured a contract to construct a new urban cable-car system in Panama City’s San Miguelito district.

Doppelmayr, a ropeway manufacturer from Vorarlberg, announced it has been granted a major urban mobility project in Panama City. The 6.6-kilometre cable-car system, named “Teleferico de San Miguelito,” will feature six stations and provide barrier-free access across the densely populated district. President José Raúl Mulino formally handed over the contract on 15 October, emphasizing the project’s potential to ease traffic congestion and raise living standards for thousands of residents.

Mayor Irma Hernandez highlighted the venture’s role in spurring economic development in the city’s most populous borough. Construction is planned to start soon, with the line expected to be operational by 2029, running 18 hours daily and completing the route in roughly 26 minutes. Doppelmayr described the award as a significant addition to its portfolio of urban mobility solutions in Latin America.

Why it matters

The new cable-car will improve public transport and reduce traffic congestion for Panama City’s largest district.
