DOSM warns of data overload and AI challenges, calls for stronger statistical literacy

The head of Malaysia's Department of Statistics, Siti Asiah Ahmad, warned that the flood of unverified numbers on digital platforms is eroding public trust, as people often accept figures without verifying their origin or validity. She noted instances where parties attribute data to DOSM even when it is not produced by the agency, prompting a need for clearer communication and education. Ahmad said DOSM will intensify outreach and literacy efforts across various media to ensure accurate interpretation of statistics.

Regarding artificial intelligence, she sees potential for faster, more detailed statistical outputs but insists that strong statistical knowledge must underpin its use to prevent unquestioned acceptance of AI-generated results. Consequently, the department will reassess its workforce structure, enhance training, and promote easier explanations of data for both the public and the media, especially as legislative approval expands its data-sharing mandate across ministries and the private sector.
