Douro River cruise traffic climbs in 2026, marking new passenger record

River tourism on the Douro reached a new high in 2026, with cruise trips accounting for the bulk of passenger traffic.

According to the Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, the Douro waterway saw its highest passenger volume to date in 2026, with most travelers using same-river cruise routes that link Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and the Pinhão area. These cruise services represent roughly four-fifths of total river traffic. Hotel-ship voyages also increased slightly, whereas one-day cruises experienced a small drop and pure recreational trips fell sharply, continuing a downward trend since 2023.

The agency highlighted the importance of sustainable growth that balances tourism with local community interests. Celebrations for the 36th anniversary of the waterway’s full opening and the UNESCO-designated Alto Douro Vinhateiro will coincide with a Douro Day festival in Peso da Régua, featuring a navigable race, mini-cruises and family activities.

Why it matters

The surge underscores the Douro’s growing role as a key tourism driver while raising sustainability concerns for local communities.
