DP World starts €53.8 million green electrification scheme at Constanța terminal
DP World has begun a €53.8 million project to electrify its container terminal in Romania’s Port of Constanța, with EU co-funding and a 2028 completion target.
DP World announced the start of a €53.8 million electrification effort at its Constanța South Container Terminal in Romania, aiming for completion by 31 August 2028. The investment is partly financed by the European Union, which will provide a grant of up to €19.7 million through the Connecting Europe Facility, and by a loan of up to €25 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, with the remaining funds coming from the terminal operator.
The scheme will electrify 29 container blocks by laying roughly 6 km of busbar infrastructure to run electric rubber-tired gantry cranes, and will build a charging hub featuring ten charging points for ten electric terminal tractors. A dedicated transformer station and two cold-ironing systems will enable docked vessels to draw renewable electricity from shore, eliminating the need for auxiliary engines. Additional transformer stations and high-capacity transformers will support the new power demand. This project is part of a broader €100 million electrification plan that also includes remotely operated electric gantry cranes and more electric equipment.
Why it matters
The project advances green port operations, reducing emissions and modernising a key Black Sea hub.
