DRC Ebola outbreak spreads to five provinces as health workers strike over unpaid bonuses
The Democratic Republic of Congo is confronting its 17th Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo variant, with confirmed cases approaching 3,000 and deaths exceeding 1,300. The epidemic has expanded to five provinces, chiefly the northeastern Ituri region. Health personnel at the Bunia treatment centre in eastern Congo staged a walkout over two months of unpaid performance bonuses, interrupting care for patients.
Prime Minister Judith Suminwa visited Ituri province earlier in the week. The UN Humanitarian Air Service coordinator warned that reaching affected communities remains a major obstacle, while more than 100 health workers have been infected and around 35 have died since May.
