DRDO Demonstrates Live Quantum Key Distribution for Secure Defence Networks
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully tested a quantum key distribution system on an operational test range in Chandipur.
On Wednesday, the Defence Research and Development Organisation reported a successful live-network test of its quantum key distribution (QKD) platform at the Proof & Experimental Establishment in Chandipur. The QKD system, created under the Microelectronic Devices, Computational Systems & Cyber Security cluster with industry partner Taqbit labs, is intended to secure real-time observations and telemetry for artillery and armoured weapon trials.
By exploiting quantum mechanical properties, the platform can generate cryptographic keys and reveal any interception attempts, providing a level of security beyond conventional cryptography. The initiative is part of a broader DRDO-Industry-Academia collaboration that includes 15 Centres of Excellence at institutions such as the IITs, IISc and other universities. Free-space QKD, which avoids costly fiber deployment, is highlighted as a dual-use technology for defence, finance and telecommunications. This milestone advances India's capabilities in quantum-secured communications for strategic sectors.
Why it matters
It shows India can protect critical defence data with cutting-edge quantum encryption, reducing vulnerability to future cyber threats.
