Drier Planet Fuels Surge in Certain Infectious Diseases, New Study Finds
A recent review of nearly 100 studies links intensified droughts to increased transmission of several water-related diseases worldwide.
A new paper in Trends in Ecology and Evolution synthesizes almost a hundred scientific reports to show how a warming, increasingly arid world reshapes infectious-disease dynamics. The authors, including aquatic disease ecologist Tara Stewart Merrill and professor Pieter Johnson, note that many pathogens depend on water, yet drought can boost illnesses like cholera, West Nile virus and dengue—a counter-intuitive pattern labeled the “drought-disease paradox.”
Field observations from California’s valley-fever spikes, Somalia’s 2017 cholera surge and Brazil’s dengue risk after dry spells support the link. Wildlife disease ecologist Georgia Titcomb explains that animals congregate at shrinking water sources, raising parasite transmission, while biologist Sam Sabado highlights “weather whiplash,” where wet periods seed pathogens that later spread during drought. The authors argue that improved satellite monitoring and careful water management will be crucial as climate change drives more frequent and severe droughts.
