Driver flees police at over 200 km/h, crashes and attempts to hitchhike home

A 23-year-old driver in Cordoba ignored a police stop, reached speeds above 200 km/h on the A-4, crashed near El Carpio and was later arrested after trying to hitchhike back to the city.

During the early hours of October 14, local police in Cordoba tried to stop a 23-year-old driver on Avenida Azabache after observing dangerous manoeuvres. He ignored sirens, accelerated past the checkpoint and reached speeds reported to exceed 200 km/h as he headed north on the A-4 motorway. The chase continued into the El Carpio area, where the car flipped near an unpaved track.

Instead of staying with the wreck, the driver ran through an olive grove and later attempted to hitchhike on the CO-3108 road, offering money to anyone willing to drive him back to Cordoba. Police, working with the Guardia Civil, located and arrested him; checks confirmed he did not possess a driving licence. Authorities cited the incident as an example of the serious treatment given to extreme speeding under Spanish traffic law, which carries prison terms and long driving bans. The case follows previous high-speed pursuits in Andalucía that have similarly escalated on major routes.

Why it matters

The chase shows the dangers of extreme speeding and the need for coordinated police response to protect road safety.
