Driver in Blue Jeep nearly runs over journalist outside Maine methadone clinic

A man in a blue Jeep Compass attempted to strike investigative reporter Joe Sokol and his cameraman outside the Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center, an incident the outlet calls attempted vehicular homicide.

Investigative reporter Joe Sokol was filming near the Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center when a driver in a blue Jeep Compass approached, claiming Sokol was violating privacy. The driver left the scene but returned moments later, nearly running over Sokol and his cameraman, an event described as attempted vehicular homicide. Sokol’s quick response allowed him to record the vehicle’s license plate, and he emerged unharmed.

The Maine Wire’s editor-in-chief, Steve Robinson, said the incident is under investigation by Bangor police, noting possible intoxication. Robinson also pledged full cooperation, offering vehicle details and the driver’s social media history. The outlet highlighted that this follows a series of confrontations with its reporters earlier in 2026.

Why it matters

The attack raises concerns about press safety and intimidation of journalists covering public health facilities.
